On July 18th, the world will be introduced to the new face of Evil –The Joker (Heath Ledger) – when the long-awaited sequel in the Batman series – The Dark Knight — will be released. When you think of Batman, most people either think of Jack Nicolson or Cesar Romero as the Joker. Well get ready to have you socks knock off your feet, Ledger brings the Joker to life like it has never been seen before. The darkest version to date!
This installment of Batman finds our hero, with the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, waging a war on dismantling all organized crime in Gotham. Their success goes unchecked until a new criminal arrives on the scene — The Joker. Joker uses this crack down as an opportunity to steal from organized crime as a way to blackmail them into a united army to take down the Dark Knight. In an interview in the New Your Times recently, Heath Ledger talks about playing this dark figure — the Joker. Here are some clips:
Says the NYT: He is here in London filming…The Dark Knight It is a physically and mentally draining role – his Joker is a “psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy” he said cheerfully – and, as often happens when he throws himself into a part, he is not sleeping much.
“Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night,” he said. “I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going.” One night he took an Ambien, which failed to work. He took a second one and fell into a stupor, only to wake up an hour later, his mind still racing. And to make sure that he’s fully developed into the role… Here too was his Joker diary, which he began compiling four months before filming began. It is filled with images and thoughts helpful to the Joker back story, like a list of things the Joker would find funny. (AIDS is one of them.) Mr. Ledger seemed almost embarrassed that the book had been spotted, as if he had been caught trying to get extra credit in school.
